Columbia middle school music room suffers rain damage

A Columbia middle school music room is damaged after Tuesday night’s rain. It wasn’t much rain, but the downpour was fast and hard.

The roof on West Middle School was already damaged from storms, including the big storm Columbia saw on July 7.

There have been ongoing roof repairs on the school all summer.

District officials said the roof just couldn’t handle the heavy rain. They said the music room is the part of the school that’s affected.

ABC 17 News is told water came in and soaked the floor of the room and damaged some of the band instruments that were being kept in the room.

District officials said they’re waiting for the insurance company to come out and assess the damages and will have professionals look at the instruments to see how badly damaged they are. They also said the room can still be used, but not until damages are assessed.

Michelle Baumstark with Columbia Public Schools said there will be a repair plan put in place going forward.
