Jefferson City Police receive training funds

The Jefferson City Police Department is getting some much needed money to help train officers.

The Public Safety Committee approved $17,000 Tuesday night to go to the Department. A little bit goes a long way when it comes to training and investigation techniques.

Captain Doug Shoemaker said, “We have memberships, there are a lot of additional things that we could do that really follows us throughout the year for our officers. It benefits a lot of officers; homicide investigation, interrogation, interview training, those types of things really add up.”

The money was accumulated over time and as of this week, has now been handed over to the department heads to use for various types of training.

Shoemaker said, “The three dollar fund is in essence a combination surcharge or fee from city court cases.”

It will also help pay for training 9 new police officers to become certified to work in the state.

“We we’re allowed to hire additional people and of course that takes money, money that we would’ve used to spend on this training but that’s a benefit, we got the officers that we needed and then secondly we were able to continue this training and really finish out the way we needed to this year,” said Shoemaker.
