Fire guts Jefferson City duplex, none injured

When a strong breeze blows, you can smell the lingering smoke around a duplex on Cherry Street in Jefferson City.

It has all the signs of a fire – blackened and boarded windows, shattered and scattered glass and melted vinyl siding. The duplex next to it is also damaged, but only the siding. One person living there says the brick the building is made from saved it from complete destruction.

Neighbors of the duplex on the 200 block of Cherry Street aren’t sure what the fate of the building will be. The Jefferson City Fire Department did not return ABC 17 News’ requests for information Sunday afternoon.

The Red Cross said it has provided financial assistance to the residents of both duplexes damaged. According to people in the neighborhood, a couple and a small child lived on the top floor of the duplex where the fire started, and a man lived on the ground floor. No one was seriously injured in the fire.
