Man gets 20 years for robbing Dollar General over last year’s holiday

A man was sentenced to 20 years for robbing a Dollar General store in south Columbia the day before New Year’s Eve in 2013.

Kenneth Malone, 48, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to second-degree robbery.

Prosecutors also told ABC 17 News Malone is a persistent offender, with past convictions for burglary and selling drugs near a school.

Police were called to Dollar General around 4:10 p.m. December 30, after a man walked in with a pellet gun and demanded money. The store is just off Nifong Boulevard and Providence Road.

Malone escaped with cash, but police later found his coat and weapon.
