Capital City Salvation Army needs volunteers

The Jefferson City Salvation Army is in need of local volunteers as soon as possible.

Boxes and boxes of unpacked food sat inside the doors of the Salvation Army Monday afternoon, all waiting to be unpacked by volunteers.

“We have to be able to get them to the public, and through the efforts of volunteers we can keep serving the public and continue the number we’ve seen in the past,” said Director of Development Cyndy Chapman.

The program is lacking those willing to commit their time. Last month, officials said that a thousand visitors walked in in need of assistance, which is a reason why volunteers are really needed to help distribute the food.

However, they also need people who can unpack, hand out, and prepare kits and food for those that walk in.

“If we can have some consistent volunteers and it’s not every day, we know, we don’t ask people to be here 8 hours a day every day. We know that’s too much, but if they can give one day a week or even two days a month that would greatly help us out.”

The organization needs volunteers on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and then again from 1:00 to 2:00 in the afternoon.

In 2012, about 3.5 million people volunteered their time to the Salvation Army nationwide. The Jefferson City location is currently looking for hygiene and diaper products.
