BREAKING: Columbia man found guilty in 2013 McKee St. Park murder
A Columbia man was found guilty in Boone County Court Friday night in the summer 2013 shooting death of Tre’veon Marshall.
A jury decided 20-year-old Nicholas Thomas fatally shot 17-year-old Tre’veon Marshall in Columbia’s McKee Street Park on July 14, 2013.
Prosecutor Tracy Gonzalez told ABC 17 News it was a verdict she wasn’t surprised by — because it’s the justice they’ve been waiting on for a year for Marshall.
Marshall’s mother said she was thankful it was over, and feels like people will be safer now that “the monster who killed her son is off the streets”.
Marshall’s friend, CJ Stock, agreed.
“I feel it went good,” Stock said. “They convicted a monster. He took my brother’s life and now his life is taken.”
Thomas declined a jury sentencing for the second count of armed criminal action. He will be sentenced for first degree murder and armed criminal action on July 28 at 1:30 by a judge.
The sentence for first degree murder is life in prison without parole. He could be facing another three years to life for armed criminal action.
He has 25 days to file for a new trial, which his public defender says is an option.
A second suspect, Joshua Murray, who is also charged with first degree murder, took the stand during the trial. Murray testified that he and Thomas went to the park to fight Marshall, but said he had no idea Thomas was going to shoot Marshall.
Murray’s trial is scheduled for August.
