UM Curators discuss future sexual harrassment policies

On Friday, the UM Board of Curators finished a two day meeting.

UM System President Tim Wolfe referred several times to the task force put in place after the Sasha Menu Courey case made national news.

Wolfe has been given a temporary executive authority with regard to sexual assaults.

Wolfe said, “The curators came together with the leadership of the campuses in an effort to keep everyone safe.”

Wolfe referred to the safety efforts as a “never-ending journey” that will always have room for improvement.

Wolfe said, “The temporary delegation was put in place because there needs to be changes made to the existing policy… The board doesn’t meet until October, so the changes to the policy will need to be done between now and October,” said Wolfe.

Wolfe said their goal is the have the right resources and approach to reaction, as well as prevention of sexual assault situations.

“Some institutions could have walked away from this. Some institutions could have not prioritized this. Some institutions could have stood behind their current positions… not our institution,” said Wolfe.

Wolfe said in the unfortunate event of assault, sexual harassment or a mental health issue, they will know how to quickly respond and handle it.
