Utah Jazz appoint Quin Snyder as next head coach

Former Mizzou men’s basketball coach Quin Snyder is set to become the next head coach of the Utah Jazz, the team announced Friday. Snyder will receive a three year deal.

Snyder, who was recently an assistant with the Atlanta Hawks, had been interviewing for the head coaching vacancy within the last few weeks. The former MU coach was previously a head coach of the Austin Toros (NBA D-League) and an assistant with the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers.

“The opportunity to join the Utah Jazz and to be part of such a highly respected franchise with an incredibly bright future is a great honor,” Snyder said in a statement through the Jazz. “I approach this opportunity with gratitude and humility and am committed to doing everything I can to help the Jazz become a championship-caliber team.”

This will be Snyder’s first NBA head coaching job.

Snyder took over the Missouri basketball program when Norm Stewart retired. Missouri athletic director Mike Alden chose Snyder over high-profile coaches John Calipari and Bill Self. Snyder took the Tigers to the Elite 8 in 2002, but was not retained in 2006 after NCAA infractions loomed over the program.

Missouri went 128-96 in Snyder’s tenure with the Tigers.
