Cole County Sheriff gets MRAP
It’s a machine that’s usually used for war, but the Cole County Sheriff’s Department could soon be using it in a neighborhood near you.
MRAP is short for, mine resistant, ambush protected, armored vehicle. The cost would normally be about $600,000. Through a Defense Department program, Cole County Sheriff Greg White was able to get the vehicle for free.
Their current SWAT vehicle is nearly 30 years old, and the new MRAP has heavier armor and will be more reliable.
The department plans to use the vehicle for tactical missions and to serve drug warrants.
Captain John Wheeler told ABC 17 News the vehicle is so massive, the hope is that the appearance alone could be a deterrent.
