Lawmakers on both sides react to new tax cut

By a vote of 109 to 46, the Missouri House of Representatives overrode Governor Nixon’s veto to Senate Bill 509.

The House needed one democratic vote in order to override the veto.

Democratic Representative, Keith English, was the deciding vote.

Tim Jones said, “In a bi-partisan consensus fashion, we fulfilled one of our major promises to the Missourian’s who sent us here today. That was to provide the first tax cut reform, tax relief this state has seen in almost one hundred years.”

Boone County democratic Representative, Chris Kelly, said, “This is a victory for the Republican party and a defeat for higher education, elementary education and secondary education.”

“It will be a significant income transfer out of Boone County. It will cost Boone County schools seven million dollars and millions of dollars less to the University,” said Kelly.

During voting on the house floor there were four vacancies.

Democratic Representative John Wright was one of those vacancies.

Wright said, “I have consistently voted against this bill and continue to oppose it.”

Speaker Jones said this bill means more revenue for the state, education and healthcare.
