Schnucks recalls chicken salad on listeria fears

A popular Midwest grocer recalled chicken salad Saturday amidst fears it had become contaminated with listeria.

Schnucks Kitchen, of O’Fallon, recalled 130 pounds of curry white meat chicken salad because walnuts in the bagged item may have come in contact with the pathogen, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

Inspectors randomly selected the product for testing and found the contamination on walnuts in the salad on April 28. No illness had been reported as of Saturday.

Listeria primarily affects the elderly, newborns, pregnant mothers, and people with compromised immune systems. Its symptoms include gastrointestinal problems and fever.

The product was sold in three pound bags at deli counters and had been shipped to retailers on April 24, 2014.

The plastic containers may have had a purchase date between April 24 and May 2, 2014. Labels could have the case code 0989674 or 0963124 as well as establishment number “EST. P-13562” inside the USDA mark of inspection, according to the USDA.
