Hundreds show up to “Serve Jefferson City”
Hundreds of volunteers braved rain chances Saturday morning to help clean up Jefferson City.
The third annual Serve Jefferson City event started with a pancake breakfast at 9 a.m., hosted by Senator MIke Kehoe.
Then it was out to all corners of the city to help pick up trash, clean up creeks, and tidy flower beds.
“They’re giving a lot of service to different non-profit agencies to help beautify their centers,” said Serve Jefferson City coordinator Ken Hussey. “They’re making them safe and pretty for the spring.”
Downtown, ABC 17 News found a small group of volunteers working on a project with bigger plans. They were clearing a flower bed to make room for a handicap-accessible ramp outside one shop.
“Hopefully we have some funding coming to put in a ramp to make sure our building is accessible for woman who may be in a wheelchair,” said volunteer Liz Lehman.
Other projects included landscape work on the Greenway and technical work at the Council for a Drug Free Youth office downtown.
“I love being out in the community and seeing other people be apart of the community as well,” said volunteer Allison Johnson.
Serve Jefferson City was a collaboration between the YMCA, Parks and Recreation Department, and the United Way.
