Columbia police searching for central city shooter

Columbia police were searching for a shooter or shooters Saturday night, after reports of gunfire in central city.

Investigators shut down West Worley Street around 9:10 p.m. Saturday after reports of shots fired from a car. Early reports indicated at least one person was hit, but had left the scene.

A neighbor on nearby Oak Street told ABC 17 News he heard dozens of shots between two groups and described the noise like bottle rockets going off.

Investigators had cleared the scene at Worley and McBaine Avenue within 20 minutes, after University Hospital received a gunshot victim at 9:25 p.m.

The 18-year-old black man had been sitting in his car when he was hit, according to a news release Sunday. He had non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators began a search for a grey Chevrolet Impala, which witnesses said carried four black male suspects with dreadlocks.

According to the news release, officers later found the Impala unoccupied and with multiple bullet holes. Its location was not disclosed.

Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call CrimeStoppers at 875-TIPS to leave anonymous information, or call Columbia police.
