Fire destroys barn north of Columbia near Sturgeon

Boone County firefighters were called to a structure fire just after noon Tuesday near Highway 63 north of Columbia on Barnes Road, just south of Sturgeon. An outside fire quickly spread, destroying a 40 foot by 40 foot barn.

When crews arrived, the barn was fully engulfed in fire, which also spread to the nearby house. The blaze damaged the siding, but firefighters saved rest of the home.

The flames also spread to some dead trees in the front yard. The next closest station is Fire Station 6 in Sturgeon, and crews had to bring in their own water, because there were no hydrants near the scene.

The residents told ABC 17 News they were burning a wood stove and threw down its hot coals this morning, but strong wind gusts quickly spread the fire.

Residents were home when it started, but nobody was injured. Boone Electric also had to shut off power so firefighters could use water on the barn.
