Jefferson City Public Schools are preparing for severe weather

The Jefferson City Public Schools are preparing for severe weather by holding tornado drills.

Educators say practicing what to do in the case of severe weather not only keeps children safe, it keeps them cool and collected if there is a real emergency.

Every classroom in the JCPS system has a plan of where to go and what to do if severe weather were to hit.

During the drills, students go to the lowest level of the building, duck and cover.

Bearden says these drills will help the children not to panic if severe weather does become a threat.

“Children thrive off of structure and routine activities. In emergencies, it helps for them to know what is expected, where we’re going, and what we’re going to do when we get there so that they can remain calm and confident,” said Jennifer Bearden, 5th grade teacher at Cedar Hills Elementary.

JCPS hold tornado drills in the fall as well as the spring.
