Excello man charged for 2011 death of Jon Spurling

Charges were filed on Thursday for an Excello, Mo. man who was arrested Wednesday in the 2011 death of Jon Spurling near Harrisburg.

ABC 17 News confirmed with Howard County Sheriff Mike Neal that Zack Jefferson, 34, was arrested around 11 a.m. Wednesday. Prosecutors handed down two counts of first-degree murder and armed criminal action Thursday morning.

Jefferson was an acquaintance of Spurling’s ex-wife, according to Neal.

Jon Spurling was shot to death near Harrisburg home in August 2011. At that time, Sheriff Charlie Polson said it appeared Spurling had walked in on a crime happening at his home.

Spurling’s friends and family had pushed for justice in the case since that time, setting up a Facebook page and a website and offering a reward for information leading to an arrest.
