Father of Randy Chugg gives son Purple Heart

On Sunday, a Jefferson City family said goodbye to a son and soldier.

Randy Chugg’s body was found along the Missouri River near Chamois last week after he had been missing for months. Police say he jumped from the Missouri River bridge in December.

Randy Chugg was in the Army. On Sunday, Chugg’s father, a Marine, was surrounded by fellow soldiers as he gave his son one last gift– a Purple Heart medal.

Emotions ran high at the Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home in Jefferson City as Chris Chugg took a Purple Heart medal from his own vest and pinned it on Randy’s casket so he could be buried with honor.

Chris Chugg told ABC 17 News last week his son was his hero.

Hundreds showed up to express their support for Randy Chugg’s family and pay their respects.

Chugg’s family said honoring Randy doesn’t end here.

Chris Chugg said he’s setting up a scholarship in Randy’s name to help students who want to go into arts because Randy enjoyed music and expressing himself through art.

Chugg also said he wants to raise awareness about depression and help other families who may find themselves in this situation.

While his son may be laid to rest, Chris Chugg said Randy’s name will live on and make a difference.
