Sunday snow causes slideoffs in Columbia

Sunday afternoon snow slowed traffic and slick roads caused slideoffs and crashes throughout mid-Missouri.

As of 2:30 p.m., multiple crashes had been reported on Interstate 70 near the U.S. 63 connector in Columbia.

Emergency crews told ABC 17 News one crash at the connector involved at least five vehicles.

U.S. 63 southbound near the Broadway exit in Columbia was also the scene of multiple slideoffs. Columbia police issued a warning to avoid the area shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday.

Lanes of southbound U.S. 63 were blocked for crashes and emergency response throughout the afternoon, near the Broadway exit.

Travelers told ABC 17 News they were pulling off and stopping at gas stations near the connector in Columbia because of heavy traffic due to accidents.

Jennifer Dujakovich and her family were traveling from St. Louis to their home in Kansas City and made a stop in Columbia.

“It looked pretty bad, so we decided to stop and get gas now so we’d be ready to sit in traffic, I guess until we get home,” she said.

Columbia Public Works said a 15 person crew would out treating priority streets across town through Sunday evening. An eight person crew will be working overnight into Monday morning treating the roads for the morning commute.
