I-70 reopens after multiple crashes in one mile span

Steady snowfall caused chaos on mid-Missouri roads throughout the morning and early afternoon Tuesday.

Interstate 70 just west of Columbia has just started to reopen after closing around 9:30 a.m. due to several accidents, including a jack-knifed tractor trailer.

Crashes involving ten tractor trailers and 12 other vehicles blocked lanes around the 131 mile-marker near the Lake of the Woods exit. Two people were transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Emergency workers said drivers were going too fast for the slick conditions, especially because most routes are still partly covered in snow. Boone County first responders have already handled at least 30 wrecks, including with 13 injuries just since 6 a.m.

Around 7:30 a.m., another accident also involving several semi-trucks blocked both westbound lanes of I-70 just east of the Missouri River bridge.

MoDOT Central District reported one lane of U.S. 63 at Stadium Boulevard was blocked in Columbia around 10:45 a.m. because of a crash, it reopened about 30 minutes later.

In Callaway County, one lane of Route 63 was briefly closed at the Katy Trail Bridge because of a crash from about 11 a.m. to 11:43 a.m.

ABC 17 Stormtrack Chief Meteorologist Sharon Ray said most of Mid-Missouri would see steady snowfall from noon until 6 p.m. Tuesday, with a dusting continuing through the overnight hours.
