Super Bowl Sunday, snow drive people to grocery stores

Between an icy weekend with the threat of more winter weather to come and the Super Bowl, mid-Missouri grocery stores were swamped Sunday.

“We were really slammed right before the ice hit,” said Megan Tipton, a cashier at Luckys Market in Columbia. “I imagine it will happen again [this week].”

ABC 17 News talked to several shoppers stocking up for both the big game and the potential of a big snowfall later this week.

“We live out in the county, so we figured we should pick up the essentials,” said Sarah Smith.

She and Morgan Sharp live in a house divided Sunday. Smith is a self-proclaimed Peyton Manning fan and rooted for the Denver Broncos while wearing Manning’s former Indianapolis Colts jersey. Sharp was cheering for the ultimate victors, the Seattle Seahawks.

They were also grabbing last minute Super Bowl food, along with essentials like bread and cereal.

Claire Davies was more focused on the impending weather.

“I got invited to a Super Bowl party, but I said ‘no thanks,'” she laughed.

Davies was picking up fruit, bread and other foods she had found on at Luckys Market.

“I’m to the bare bones pretty much, so I was kind of scraping by yesterday [in the ice],” she added.

Luckys Market managers told ABC 17 News they expected the crowds because the store is still relatively new to Columbia.

Other stores across mid-Missouri also reported heavy traffic throughout the weekend.
