Columbia road crews plan to hit residential streets overnight
Streets crews in Columbia planned to get into many residential roads overnight Saturday into Sunday, as refreezing became a concern.
According to streets managers with Columbia Public Works, a full staff would be working to scrape and salt roads from 7 p.m. Saturday through 7 a.m. Sunday.
Full crews had been on hand since the ice started forming Friday evening.
Managers at the office told ABC 17 News Saturday night the crews were working to clear and salt secondary streets as of 8 p.m.
“We’re going to try to get as many of them as we can we will be putting salt on those streets and that seems to be helping them with the slickness,” said Scott Bitterman, a streets manager for Columbia Public Works.
On Facebook, Public Works noted that crews would be working residential streets starting at the center of the city and working outward through the night.
It also noted that crews may need to begin using a calcium chloride treatment if temperatures dropped below a level at which salt is effective.
Streets crews were also asking residents to move their cars off the sides of streets if possible Saturday night, so that plows could more easily clear those streets by morning.
