Center of Hope offers refuge to Jefferson City homeless

Jefferson City warming centers are near capacity with these record low temperatures.

The warming center and only homeless shelter in Jefferson City, Center of Hope, says the cold weather has brought in more homeless people than ever through it’s doors this winter.

Timothy Doby served for 10 years in the Marine Corps and is now homeless. He arrived at the shelter three weeks ago and says he is grateful for the refuge it provides.

“When I came here, I came in here with just one backpack. No jacket. They gave me vouchers for clothing. They gave me a warm bed,” said Doby.

Doby says he does worry about those who are homeless and have not yet come to the shelter.

“In weather like this, if you get out there and have no blanket, very little clothing, you’re gonna freeze to death. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you’re gonna freeze to death,” said Doby.

Shelter officials say they are doing their best to keep up with the increased amount of guests, but they could always use food and clothing donations.
