Ferguson case gets special prosecutor

A special prosecutor was appointed to the Ryan Ferguson case on Friday.

Boone County Prosecutor Dan Knight asked for one to be appointed due to a conflict of interest, and the court granted the request. Assistant Missouri Attorney General Susan Boresi will act as the special prosecutor.

On Tuesday, an appeals court threw out the murder conviction for Ferguson in the 2001 of killing Columbia Tribune Sports Editor Kent Heitholt.

Ferguson also asked the court to set his bond while the prosecution decides on whether to refile charges. The state attorney general’s office has until Tuesday to challenge the request, and must decide by November to retry Ferguson, or else he could walk free.
