Columbia drops red light cameras
Columbia is no longer enforcing its red light cameras based on a new appeals court decision.
On Thursday the city temporarily suspended the cameras after this week’s ruling from the Missouri Eastern District Court of Appeals.
Getting caught on a camera usually counts as a non-moving violation. But on Tuesday, the panel of judges said it is technically a moving violation, which conflicts with most of the current statutes.
Red light cameras first appeared in Columbia in 2006. Back in August, the city changed its ordinance, placing full responsibility on the vehicle’s owner and not its driver.
Only people who fall under the current law will see their cases dropped.
Lawyers involved in this latest decision think it will eventually end up with the state supreme court.
