Frank Haith suspended for first five games of 2013-14 season
Current Missouri men’s basketball coach and former Miami coach Frank Haith is suspended for the first five games of the regular season.
The NCAA connects Haith to the Nevin Shapiro scandal during his time at Miami. The NCAA announced sanctions for the University of Miami for “lack of institutional control” on Tuesday.
In a release, the NCAA reports, “The former head men’s basketball coach (Haith) failed to meet his responsibilities as a head coach when he did not monitor the activities of his assistant coaches, and attempted to cover up the booster’s threats to disclose incriminating information, according to the committee.”
Haith must also attend a rules seminar after the 2013-2014 season.
The investigation started more than two years ago, which found that former Miami booster Nevin Shapiro gave student athletes improper benefits. Shapiro is a convicted felon, serving for 20-year prison sentence for conducting a $930 million Ponzi scheme.
The report said Shapiro, at one point, experienced financial trouble. It claims he went to Haith and asked for a large sum of money, which Shapiro would return in the form of a $50,000 booster donation. When Shapiro was jailed, he continued to threaten Haith and his staff for money, The report says Haith and an assistant, “worked together to make sure the booster received $10,000 to end the booster’s threats.” The report also said Haith’s assistants, went to Shapiro to entertain recruits and their coaches.
