Upset in Athens: Mizzou beats No. 7 Georgia

The Tigers are the talk of the SEC.

No. 25 Missouri upset No. 7 Georgia, 41-26 on Saturday. This is the team’s first road win versus a top 10 opponent since 1981. It comes one day after the 10-year anniversary of Mizzou’s win over then-No. 7 Nebraska in 2003 at Faurot Field.

Mizzou is now 6-0, and 2-0 in the SEC.

Missouri jumped out to a 28-10 lead with 5:46 in the second after Shane Ray forced a fumble. Michael Sam scooped the ball up and ran into the endzone for the score. He is the third Mizzou defensive lineman to score a touchdown this season.

Aaron Murray lead the Bulldogs on a comeback, as Georgia got within two points of tying the game in the fourth quarter. However, the Tigers picked off Murray twice late in the game to seal the deal.

L’Damian Washington had 7 receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns. His biggest catch came in the middle of the fourth quarter, as Maty Mauk tossed it behind the line to Bud Sasser. The junior wideout then chucked it toward the endzone, as Washington caught the pass over a Bulldog defender.

James Franklin and E.J. Gaines both left the game injured. Franklin landed on his shoulder after getting tackled. It was the same shoulder that cost him playing time in 2012.Gaines, Missouri’s best corner, injured his quad in the second quarter and did not return. Both will be examined further when the team flies back to Columbia.

As of 8 P.M. on Saturday, an MU spokesperson said that there is no official time fram on Franklin’s injury (despite reports the quarterback would be out for six weeks or more). The spokesperson added they would know more about the injury after the game.

The Tigers host Florida next Saturday. Kick off time is 11:21 a.m.
