Drivers confused, concerned for safety in closure of Stadium overpass

The Stadium bridge over Interstate 70 is officially closed, as of 7 p.m. Friday.

Now drivers cannot drive on the overpass until Monday morning. They can only make right turns on or off the ramps.

Many drivers on Stadium were extremely confused about what detours to take, and some did not even know the construction was set to happen.

ABC 17 News spoke with 10 drivers, and all of them but one were confused about where to go or what to do.

MODOT Engineer Charles Sullivan is working on the diverging diamond interchange.

He says the extra traffic and headaches caused by construction will be well worth it come Monday.

“It’ll make things smoother and allow for more traffic to flow through,” Sullivan said.

He believes drivers can still be safe even if they’re unsure of exactly where they’re going.

“They need to take it slow, follow the signs we have set up,” Sullivan said. “We’ll have crews there to help guide them if they need and they can call 1-888-ASK-MODOT if they have any questions.”

When the overpass opens again on Monday, it will be Mid-Missouri’s first diverging diamond interchange.
