Fuel spill shuts down Bernadette Drive

A fuel spill shut down part of a busy road in west Columbia Wednesday afternoon.

Around 2:30 p.m., Columbia fire crews were called to the intersection of Bernadette Drive and Tiger Lane after a fuel tank had separated from a truck.

Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief James Weaver says 75 to 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled before the leak was found.

According to officials, the fuel got into gutters on Bernadette Dr. and Tiger Ln. and several gallons leaked into the storm water inlet near Ash Street.

The Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene and crews used oil absorbent to clean up some of the fuel.

Around 5 p.m., Columbia sewer workers began to flush the storm water inlet to clear it of fuel.

Since the incident, Bernadette Dr. and Tiger Ln. have reopened.
