Study: Car seats not being installed correctly

Three out of four car seats are not used correctly, according to the global children’s organization, Safe Kids.

A new study out of Ohio said one of the reasons for this is because cars and car seats are not always compatible.

Experts at the Ohio State University College of Medicine measured the width, height and depth of dozens of car seat models and then compared those to the dimensions of back seats found in several vehicles. The two often did not match up.

Sept. 15-21 is National Child Passenger Safety Week, when organizations and police departments across the nation bring awareness to car seat issues.

Safe Kids is hosting thousands of car seat checkup events. Checkup events allow parents to bring their car and car seat to a trained technician who will check the car seat for free.

One car seat checkup will be Tuesday from 4:30 to 6 p.m., at the Bob McCosh Chevrolet dealership on Business Loop 70 in Columbia.

Safe Kids will also offer a second car seat checkup in Centralia on Thursday. The event will be from 5-7 p.m. at Forrest Chevrolet on Rollins Street.
