Chamois power plant halts electricity production

A Mid-Missouri plant has stopped generating electricity, less than two weeks from officially closing.

The Chamois Power Plant, operated by Central Electric Power Cooperative, has stopped producing electricity. On Tuesday morning, the final generator went offline.

The Central Electric Power Cooperative decided earlier this year to shut down the plant due to new mandates from the Environmental Protection Agency. In order to come into compliance with new rules from the EPA, the plant would have had to undergo pollution-reducing upgrades that would cost an estimated $14 million.

Some of the plant’s 30 employees took jobs with the Associated Electric Cooperative, while other accepted a severance packaged from the company.

The last day of work at the plant will be Sept. 30.
