Record number of medical emergencies for hot Mizzou home game

More than 120 people suffered medical emergencies at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon, for a hot Tiger home game against Toledo.

None of the incidents were considered serious.

Last game, MUPD told ABC 17 news there were 46 medical emergencies reported during the game, many due to the heat. Captain Brian Weimer said Saturday night medics responded to just 109 emergencies in all of last season.

The athletic department set up water and misting stations around the stadium for fans to cool off, but many fans couldn’t find them. The stations were set up again for Saturday’s game.

Officials also set up several areas inside the stadium where fans can go to cool off and refill their water bottles. We walked into the stadium trying find these places.

There were two areas where water jugs were being set up in the concourse on the west side of the stadium. One the north concourse above the hill, there were three misting tents and water stations. On the east and south side, there were each two watering stations.

Doctors warned fans to be aware of the surroundings. They said the best thing they can do is to stay hydrated and pay attention to the warning signs. Those signs can include a headache, dizziness, or becoming lightheaded. Doctors said that’s a sign to try and cool off. If you ignore them, you could pass out and be sent to the hospital.

The temperatures of the metal bleachers were reading nearly 110 degrees. The seat backs were coming in at a blistering 160 degrees. Doctors said it’s critical to stay hydrated in those conditions.

Each fan was allowed to bring one bottle of water into the game. There were no specifications on the size of the container, as long as it’s sealed.
