Construction continues during the heat wave

Broadway Urgent Care’s Dr. Duff warns people in mid-Missouri to stay indoors when temperatures get too hot, “If you are going to be out for an extended period of time and it is in the 80 or 90 degrees out, just don’t do it.”

However, for thousands of people that is not an option because summer construction is in full swing.

“It doesn’t get too hot. You just have to keep going, it has got to be done,” says one construction worker, “and we get a 5-gallon jug of water so we go through that.”

Water is what keeps these workers functioning as well as experience. They say it takes anywhere from two to four weeks to get acclimated to hot conditions.

The construction site at the Columbia mall was 113 degrees today, and the hottest part of the job comes when pouring concrete.

“With this concrete on the ground, we don’t get breaks until we get it all done,” says a construction worker.
