Police departments are preparing for college students’ arrival

Thousands more young people will be flocking to downtown bars and restaurants as the start of college classes near.

Police are preparing like they do every year, but with limited resources.

The Columbia Police Department told ABC 17 that it is going through its regular routine of warning college students of the dangers of drinking and night life.

The department is also gearing up for a more active downtown.

“Our downtown unit is fully staffed now up to their allotted numbers, and they’ll probably be working mainly almost every weekend,” says Sgt Joe Bernhard.

He also says they will have more foot patrolling and make sure hours are adjusted so more officers are available on the weekends when more students are venturing downtown.
