Baby delivered after mother stabbed at truck stop

A mother and her newborn infant are recovering after both were injured during a stabbing Wednesday morning.

According to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, the 30-year-old woman and a male friend began to fight at the Road Ranger Truck Stop in St. Robert.

During the argument, the man stabbed the woman in the stomach. The victim was in her ninth month of pregnancy.

The woman was rushed to a local hospital where doctors delivered the baby via cesarean section. The baby was also treated for a stab wound.

Authorities say both the mother and child are “recovering well.”

Deputies arrested Mark A. Downing, 28, of West Terre Haute, Ind. following a brief altercation. Prosecutors charged him with two counts of felony first-degree assault.

He is being held at the Pulaski County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond.
