One dead in shooting near park in northeast Columbia

One person was killed after a shooting near a park in northeast Columbia Sunday night.

Police officers were called to the McKee Street Park shortly before midnight and found Treveon J. Marshall, 17, of Columbia, injured by gunfire.

Police say Marshall was shot on a trail in the park but made his way to a playground before collapsing.

He was taken to a hospital but died about 45 minutes later.

Officers have not yet released information about any suspects in the case, but say they are getting little help from witnesses and people who knew Marshall.

“Right now, we’re not ruling out anything,” said Officer Latisha Stroer. “We’re trying to figure out what happened, why people were in the park that late at night, and trying to figure what was happening prior to the shots fired.”

Some people who were close to Marshall told ABC 17 News that he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and may have been set up. However, police would not confirm that belief.

“Investigators are working really hard to find out why the victim was in the park that late of the night and who was all there with him,” said Stroer. “They’re trying to find out if anybody saw anything suspicious prior to the shots fired and then if they saw any vehicles in the area.”
