Troubled Jefferson City day care may reopen

The state has reached a deal with a Jefferson City day care after it lost a child twice.

Kids Unlimited on Fairgrounds Road was closed last month after two incidents involving a child getting out of a gate. A passerby found the child in the street the first time and called police.

State documents showed the staff did not even realize he had been missing that first time.

ABC 17 News was the first to report this story when the state suspended the day care’s license.

Now, a deal — with a long list of changes — could help reopen Kids Unlimited.

On Wednesday, the Department of Health and Senior Services and Kids Unlimited signed off on an eight-page settlement. Inside is a detailed plan and terms of an 18-month probation.

Under the terms of probation, employees are required to check the locks of every day.

Among other requirements, Kids Unlimited has to have:

– Head counts in class every 30 minutes
– Monthly emergency drills
– Staff re-hiring and re-training

The two teachers involved in watching the wandering child cannot be employed at the day care again.

ABC 17 News tried to reach out to Kids Unlimited, but the day care’s attorney said he could not speak on behalf of the owner.

A call to the owner’s cellphone number has not been returned.

There is no word yet on when Kids Unlimited may reopen.
