Car crashes through Columbia home
Emergency crews responded to a south Columbia home Tuesday morning after a car crashed through the home.
Around 11:15 a.m., a car traveling on W. Green Meadows Road crashed into the home’s garage, then traveled through the outer wall of the garage and into the home’s front yard.
Columbia Fire Department Battalion Chief Brad Fraizer said the driver, Arthur Evans, failed to execute a turn in the road, but it’s unclear why the driver lost control of the car.
Nearly a dozen units responded to the crash.
The car broke a gas meter at the home, causing a gas leak. Ameren UE workers were able to disconnect the gas quickly.
Evans suffered “significant injuries” and was taken to University Hospital. As of Tuesday evening, he was listed in fair condition.
Three residents of the home were inside at the time of the crash, but they were uninjured.
Columbia Building and Site Development inspectors determined the home would need stabilizing around the garage, which firefighters were able to complete while on the scene.
According to court records, Evans was involved in a wrong-way crash on Highway 50 near Lee’s Summit on Dec. 30, 2012.
Just last month, prosecutors in Jackson County charged Evans for being a repeat offender of driving while intoxicated and operating a vehicle in a careless manner resulting in an accident.
