Lightning strikes Holts Summit assisted living facility

A Holts Summit assisted living facility was evacuated Sunday evening after a lightning strike sparked a small fire in the attic.

Summit Villa Lifecare’s 50 residents and staff were all accounted for, according to Holts Summit Fire Protection District public information officer Scott Pasley.

Pasley told an ABC 17 News crew at the scene the strike happened around 5 p.m., and sparked a small fire in the attic, which caused smoke and water damage to the attic and a room on the back side of the building.

The residents and staff were moved to a nearby hotel after a roll call was taken. No injuries were reported.

As of Monday afternoon, all of the facility’s residents were living in a hotel with full staff and/or family.

Employees told ABC 17 News contractors are working on repairs and they expect all residents to return to the facility by Tuesday afternoon. A fire marshal and state inspector will have to check the building before residents can return.

No damage estimate is available.

Holts Summit Fire was assisted by mutual aid from New Bloomfield Fire, Central Callaway Fire and South Callaway Fire.
