Columbia schools expand bus route after parents voice concerns

Columbia schools will expand a bus route in the fall after parents in one neighborhood voiced their concerns to ABC 17 News.

Stephany Vasquez lives off 8th Street in Columbia. Her home is 0.9 miles from Benton Elementary. That means her children do not qualify for bus service because they live less than a mile from the school.

Vasquez says her 9 and 10 year-old have to pass a smoke shop, homeless shelters, train tracks and dangerous intersections.

Last week several parents brought their concerns to the district.

On Friday, ABC 17 News confirmed officials approved their request because they considered the route hazardous. The area will now get buses starting next school year.
