National Weather Service confirms tornadoes in Mid-Missouri
The National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday that two tornadoes briefly touched down in Mid-Missouri Monday evening.
The NWS office in Kansas City said survey damage showed an EF-1 tornado tracked from Johnson County to Pettis County Monday afternoon.
“As we got east of Knob Noster a mile or two, we started to see a little more of a turning to the wind and the damage picked up quite a bit,” said NWS warning coordination meteorologist Andy Bailey. ” The heaviest damage we’ve seen was to a chicken farm just northeast of Knob Noster.”
The tornado developed about two miles east of Knob Noster then dissipated about two miles north of Hughesville. The tornado has maximum wind speeds of 95 mph and was 200 yards wide with a 14.5-mile path length.
Residents say the tornado caused significant and costly damage.
“It could be $20,000 to $30,000,” said resident George Rich. “I just don’t know yet. A couple of my cars, about $10,000 a piece and my Harley was in there.”
In Morgan County, the NWS office in Springfield, Mo. confirmed a weak EF-0 tornado briefly touched down around 8:46 p.m. Monday.
That tornado was located about three miles west-northwest of Gravois Mills, near the Lake of the Ozarks.
NWS meteorologists say the tornado was about 100 yards wide and uprooted numerous trees and caused minor structural damage.
Outside of central Missouri, a NWS survey team found only straight-line wind damage near Hannibal, Mo. The crew estimated winds were between 80 and 100 mph.
