Police look for drunk drivers on graduation weekend

After the graduation ceremonies, police expect the celebration to last into the night. They want to try and deter people from drinking and driving.

Columbia police along with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department are planning on setting up a sobriety check point sometime during the weekend.

Cops are expecting about 10 to 12 people to be arrested at the checkpoint. They didn’t tell ABC 17 News where they’re planning on setting it up, but did say there are a few areas they have targeted.

They say anytime there are big celebrations like graduations, people are more tempted to drink and drive. Cops hope they can prevent some accidents before they happen.

“Educate people about the dangers of drinking and driving, and then the checkpoints are kind of a way to even more enforce that, and drive that point home that there are consequences to drinking and driving,” Columbia police officer Joe Bernhard explains.

Cops believe this will deter some people from drinking and driving. They believe if the public knows they’re out looking specifically for this, it will change the way people go about their night.
