Jefferson City woman calls on officials to improve safety of major street
A Jefferson City woman is calling on officials to improve the safety of Missouri Boulevard.
She warns of thethreats topublic safety because of inadequate traffic lights, left turns lanes and unsafe entrances to businesses.
Mary Schantz is reaching out to both local and state transportationdepartmentsabout what she thinksarenecessary changes.
Schantz wrote a letter to the Jefferson CityTribuneabout a stretch of Missouri Boulevard.
The past few years MoDOT and Jefferson City has improved some of the issues.
Plans to continue the construction are set for later this year.
In the coming year, the city plans to resurface sidewalks to meet federal standards andhopesto addcrosswalksat stoplights.
But financialconcernsstand in the way.
“Funds are limited. We have talked throughout the years on how we would like to do more,” says Travis Koestner, MoDOT engineer.
Without a light, turning left from businesses up and down the street takes patience and could be dangerous.
It’s not just drivers Schantz is worried about, but bikers and walkers too.
