Columbia man arrested for firing shots during fight

Boone County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Columbia man early Saturday following a disturbance and shots-fired incident.

Deputies responded to the 4400 block of Santa Barbara Drive just after midnight and found several people involved in an argument.

According to law enforcement, 25-year-old Steven Levere Young fired a shot into the air during an encounter with a group of people, including at least one juvenile. Deputies say he also fired several additional shots at an adult during the fight.

One unidentified woman who lives on the street said she saw about eight-10 people standing on a duplex driveway and ran back into her home when she heard gunshots. She said she heard up to five shots fired.

No one was injured, but deputies say the handgun used in the disturbance was stolen.

Young was arrested on charges of first-degree assault, armed criminal action, receiving stolen property, endangering the welfare of a child and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Young is being held in the Boone County Jail on an $80,000 bond Saturday.

Crime is no stranger to Santa Barbara Drive, a street that’s less than a quarter mile long.

Last November, a man was shot in the leg while taking out the trash.
