Chamois power plant to close at the end of September

ABC 17 News has learned that the Chamois Power Plant in Osage County will close.

The Central Electric Power Cooperative decided to shut down the plant due to new mandates from the Environmental Protection Agency. In order to come into compliance with new rules from the EPA, the plant would have to undergo pollution-reducing upgrades that would cost an estimated $14 million.

In a statement, Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer said he is “truly disappointed to learn about the decision to close the Chamois Power Plant especially given the impact the decision will have on the plant employees, their families and the local community.”

Luetkemeyer blames government regulations, transportation costs, natural gas and a decrease in demand for the operator’s decision to close the power plant.

The plant employs about 30 workers and is set to close at the end of September.
