Deputies Investigate Shooting

Boone County Sheriff’s Department deputies are investigating a shooting in the 700 block of Demaret Drive that left one woman with a gunshot wound in the hand.Just before 12:30 a.m. deputies were called to the area and found the victim on the front porch of her apartment building. Bullet holes were found in her home, as well as in a nearby apartment building.Deputies say witnesses reported seeing two black males arguing before hearing nearly 20 gunshots. Neighbors also reported seeing a newer, white four-door car and a gold-colored, four-door car leaving the area.Neighbors who did not want to go on camera say the shooting was not random.”They have a specific target they’re after,” said one resident.Law enforcement says Demaret Drive continues to be a problem area. Last night’s shooting was the seventh on the street just this year.”We’ve been out there about 500 times since the first of the year,” said Detective Tom O’Sullivan. “You name it, it’s happening on Demaret Drive.”In addition to the seven shots fired calls, police have responded to 17 disturbances, nine reports of child abuse, six calls for drug activity, five assaults, and three burglaries since January 1st, 2012.Det. O’Sullivan says having deputies constantly on Demaret Drive is not an option, but deputies do patrol as often as possible. Two hours before the shooting on Demaret Drive, deputies also reported to a shots fired call in the 4300 block of Southview Drive near Scott Boulevard. No one was in the residence, and no injuries were reported. Police say they’re unsure if the two incidents are related.
