***UPDATE WEDNESDAY 4:45 P.M.***Columbia police have confirmed the victim is a 5-year-old child. The investigation is still ongoing.***ORIGINAL STORY***Columbia police are investigating a sexual assault at an elementary school.According to police, a mother told cops her son was inappropriately touched while attending summer school at Alpha Hart Lewis Elementary.A spokesperson for Columbia Public Schools tells ABC 17 News that this incident does not involve any adults nor does it involve school employees, which means the offender may be a child. The police report says the alleged abuse happened in June, but some school officials are just learning about it on Tuesday. CPS officials say police notified them of the abuse Monday night, but police have been investigating the case for about two weeks.Investigators are tight-lipped about the situation because they are dealing with minors. Since the alleged incident was reported directly to police, school officials have very little information to share.”We take it very serious,” said Columbia Public Schools spokesperson Michelle Baumstark. “Cooperating with police and see how things go as far as that investigation is concerned.”CPS administrators say they have not disciplined any students yet and are awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
