Mexico Department of Public Safety warns of scams following storms

MEXICO, Mo.

The City of Mexico has started receiving reports of possible scams after storms moved through the area on Thursday, according to a Friday press release.

People who do not have business licenses are allegedly going door-to-door offering to do repair work.  Residents are also getting phone calls from people saying they are with insurance companies and asking for personal or bank account information.

The Mexico Department of Public Safety is reminding residents that “no legitimate company will pay for repair work unless it is the insurance company you have been paying before the storm happened.” It also reminds residents that using contractors who are not licensed and insured increases the chance you will be scammed.

The Better Business Bureau has previously offered tips on how to protect yourself from possible scammers.
