Mizzou releases guidance for student holiday travel as fall semester concludes

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The University of Missouri is reminding its students to ensure they are prepared before heading home for the holidays, as the 2021 fall semester ended on Friday.

For students driving home, Mizzou is urging students to check fluid levels and tire pressure before getting on the road to avoid breaking down. For students leaving vehicles in university parking garages, police advise locking all doors, closing windows tightly and removing all valuables.

The university is also suggests students prepare their cars for potential winter weather by having items such as an ice scraper, rock salt and sand.

In a release, University Police Officer James Young said, “If you’re driving to your destination, make sure your vehicle is ready for the trip and always let someone know when you’re leaving and when you are expected back.”

For student homes and apartments, university police are reminding students to lock all doors and windows and unplug electronics.

Electronics police suggest unplugging include:

  • Laptops/desktop computers
  • Televisions
  • Internet Modems
  • Coffee Makers
  • Lamps
  • Microwaves
  • Cell Phone Charges
  • Surge Protectors (Flip Switch)
  • Space Heaters

Students should also turn their heat down but not completely off, to ensure pipes don't freeze. Students may also want to place their mail on hold, through the United States Postal Service.
