SALINAS, California (KSBW) — On Tuesday night, during a Salinas City Council meeting, city leaders all voted in favor of naming a road in Salinas after fallen officer Jorge David Alvarado Jr. – also known as “JD.”

He was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Feb. 25, 2022. The road that will be renamed is Murphy Street, which leads into the Salinas Police station, and will be turned into “JD Alvarado Circle.”

It was an emotional moment Tuesday night for Jorge Ernesto Alvarado, the brother of fallen officer JD Alvarado.

The brother describing the moment all city leaders voted yes, he said, “It was just so rewarding. It was an honor. Honestly, you know, I hope my brother’s watching it from heaven and, you know, sees what was done here for him.”

Mayor Kimbley Craig was the first to champion the idea. Followed by an outpouring amount of support during the council meeting. So many people, from community members to other first responders, all spoke passionately in favor of honoring the fallen officer.

During public comment, one member of the community who spoke said, “We need to come together as a unity and make this happen. We need to honor him. Even in his last moments, he was able to take out an extremely dangerous individual off the streets and gave his life for that.”

JD’s brother said his goal Tuesday night was to tell people who his brother was as a person.

“Everyone knows of my brother, but not many know truly about him, the type of man that he was. The honor of naming a street after my brother just simply reminds every active police officer that, you know, he wasn’t just a number. He will be remembered even after death.”
