Nearly 3,000 UCSC workers go on strike, picket line at campus entrances

    SANTA CRUZ, California (KSBW) — Nearly 3,000 University of California, Santa Cruz workers were on strike as of Monday morning. They are joined on the picket lines by thousands of workers across the University of California system and union members say this is about unfair working conditions.

There are 48,000 people on strike across the University of California system and UCSC is just one of ten universities involved as you can see there are several hundred people protesting at the main entrance.

Strikers arrived at the entrance of campus around 7 a.m.

There are rumors they may block the roads, buses will not cross a picket line, so far that is not the case.

Those on strike are TAs, researchers and other academic workers — a lot of the people who do the grading and mentoring for undergrad students.

Well, they allege the UC system has engaged in unfair labor practices, but the school district has denied that.

They’re asking for transportation subsidies, workplace culture changes and the biggest issue: pay. According to UC, they’re asking for a salary so their members would not have to pay more than 30% of their salary to housing.

If a compromise is not reached by December it could disrupt finals time.
